Music Plan

Music Mark School

We want to create a passion for music in our children that will stay with them for the future.  We want to ensure that music is not just a ‘subject’ but is an inspiring and engaging experience that not only helps every pupil to develop their musical potential, but also helps them to develop an appreciation of the value of music, that is deeply personal to them.  We want our children to have a curiosity about music and a respect for the role that it plays in our lives.

In Early Years, the children sing a range of well-known nursery rhymes and songs, perform songs, rhymes, poems and stories with others and (when appropriate) try to move in time with music. We ensure materials are accessible so that children are able to imagine and develop their projects and ideas while still fresh in their minds and it is important for  them to have access to  musical instruments. The curriculum provides children with opportunities to use their skills and explore concepts and ideas through their representations.

In Years 1 & 2, children follow the National Curriculum statements. Children are taught to:

  • use their voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes
  • play tuned and untuned instruments musically
  • listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded music
  • experiment with, create, select and combine sounds using the inter-related dimensions of music

All children’s music education is supplemented with the use of a specialist music teacher.  He supports children by playing the piano as an accompaniment to singing.  In Year Two all children learn how to play the recorder and in Year 1 all children learn to play the glockenspiel.   Our music curriculum is planned carefully to ensure that it addresses the National Curriculum. There are numerous opportunities to listen and appraise; to explore interrelated dimensions of music; to sing; to play a tuned and untuned instrument; to improvise, compose, perform and share. Our children also develop an understanding of the culture and history of music in relation to themselves individually, to the church and from ethnicities around the world.

The children are provided with opportunities to share their musical skills through the performance of Christmas, Easter and  end of year productions. All children have the opportunity to join the school choir which provides an opportunity for children to perform and share their musical skills.
